A review of the geomorphological literature reveals that although in some instances new concepts and data have revived explanations that were earlier rejected, more commonly published interpretations have been overlooked or forgotten by later workers. Several reasons for this can be adduced: publication in obscure or unlikely journals or in ‘foreign’ languages; citation incidental to and buried within a broader scheme and thus missed by abstract and keywords; lack of identifiable label or name of concept; terminological confusion; status (or lack of it) of proponent. In addition, the question is asked whether generational attitudes impinge on the evaluation of ideas.
