Samuel Wendell Williston spent most of his formative years as a scientist in the exploration of the Niobrara Chalk in Kansas. Much of this work was summarized in early reports of the Kansas State Geological Survey and still provides a sound basis for our modern understanding of the Niobrara Chalk and its paleoecology. This was one of the first fossil communities to become widely known to the general public.
